White matter disease is a common finding on brain MRI studies and is increasingly recognized as an important contributor to memory loss, cognitive decline, brain fog, and impaired neurological function. White matter consists of the communication pathways that connect different regions of the brain and allow information to be transmitted efficiently. When these pathways become damaged, MRI scans may reveal findings described as white matter disease, white matter changes, white matter hyperintensities, small vessel ischemic disease, or leukoaraiosis.

MRI findings of white matter disease are extremely common, particularly with advancing age. White matter changes may be associated with aging, high blood pressure, diabetes, vascular disease, chronic inflammation, autoimmune disorders, sleep apnea, prior strokes, reduced blood flow to the brain, and neurodegenerative diseases.
